We're Off to See the Wizard...

The Wizard of Oz is one of my favorite movies. I've watched it so many times that not only do I know all the words to all of the songs, but most of the dialogue as well.

Sidenote: have you ever wondered where the red-bricked road out of Munchkin Land goes? It's one my great unanswered movie questions.

Anyway... My favorite exchange between Dorothy and the Scarecrow is just before she lets him down off of his pole.

Dorothy asks: ...can't you make up your mind?

Scarecrow: I can't make my mind. I haven't got a brain--only straw.

Dorothy: How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?

Scarecrow: I don't know. But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking, don't they?

So. Effing. True.

HP7: The Review (ish)

I don't really do movie reviews. I just say whether or not I liked the movie.  I don't like to say much about the movie (or book) for those of you who haven't seen it yet.

Anyway, as you know from my previous post-I went to the Harry Potter midnight showing on Thursday/Friday. Without giving anything away-I really liked it. I liked that they used the humor of the actors and thought it was good move. Especially since the second half of the book is more intense and serious. I also thought that it ended at the perfect point and I definitely can’t wait for the next (and last) movie.


As an added bonus to the awesomeness that is HP7, my favorite professor from college was there. I saw him walk into the dimly lit theater-he’s usually pretty easy to spot. He’s always in a suit, always wears a hat, and is always carrying a paper shopping bag or a tote bag. Or several of each. My friend (who didn’t attend my college) didn’t understand why I was so excited. I posted on the Facebook that he was there and my former classmates were both excited and jealous. (PS-he was there with this guy I had a huge crush on my sophomore year. He’s married now, le sigh).

All in all it was a good night. I didn’t fall asleep until about 4am. Then Otis (the dog, not Redding) woke me up at 9:15am because he needed to go out. I slept for 11 hours Friday night. It was glorious.

In 12 Hours I'll Be in a Movie Theater

It’s heeeeere! It’s Harry Potter day, people. (-Don’t call him Harry Potter- Cuz my name is H Piddy).


I’m a little slow to get on the stuff-that’s-popular train. A lot of the time I rebel against stuff without giving it a chance because I don’t want to do/listen to/read what everyone else is. I boycotted Harry Potter when the first movie came out because I distinctly remember someone saying it was “The Wizard of Oz for a new generation”. AND NO. It’s not. The Wizard of Oz is a classic and my favoritest movie of all time and you can’t go comparing it some new movie with British kids no one has ever heard of. NO.

Then, after years of pleading from my biffle, Kellifish, I started the first book when the seventh came out. And I read them straight through. By the time I got to the last one, I was so attached to the characters that I was crying (I’m emotional to begin with). So I watched and own all of the movies, and went to the midnight show of the sixth. And tonight TONIGHT is the first half of the seventh book. I watch the trailer and I get goose bumps. The movies have been getting better and better, and I thought the last one was great, so I’m very excited.  And it's just a bonus that there's no job#2 tonight, or job #1 tomorrow.

The plan is to go home, take a nap, and grab some coffee on the way to the movie.

Also, I heart Daniel Radcliffe—watch his episode of Inside the Actor’s Studio if you ever get the chance.

PS-No, I’m not one of those people who gets dressed up for the movie.   Kellifish does have a HP tshirt though.

SO. EXCITED.

I'm pretty sure I will be there for the midnight show in 3-D.  With my hand-knitted Gryffendor scarf that I should probably make soon.

Have You Any Idea Why A Raven's Like A Writing Desk?

Saturday night I saw Alice in Wonderland.  I liked it...a lot.  Give me Johnny Depp, Tim Burton, and/or Helena Bonham Carter and I am a happy camper.  I do feel like Tim Burton was held back some because it was a Disney movie...but I still thought it was good.  I went in with no expectations.  I tried to not read any reviews or anything.  All of the 3-D shows were sold out, so I had to see it in 2-D.  Hopefully I'll get back to see it in 3-D so I can get the whole experience.

 

I'm no movie critic or student of film, so I'll just say I liked it, and leave it at that.  I always love the imagination that goes into a Tim Burton film.  And Johnny Depp does strange characters so  well.  I really wanted to get up to MOMA to see the exhibit, but I hardly get down to Philly as much as I'd like, let alone NYC.

Snow dayyyyys

Over the weekend it snowed.  A LOT.  And we're supposed to get more tomorrow night into Wednesday.  I'm hoping (against hope, maybe) that the office is closed on Wednesday.  I have to work at job #2 tomorrow night as well.  Crossing my fingers that I'll get home okay.  My car doesn't always like bad weather.  But I did just get a brand-spankin'-new battery tonight.

I like snow days. But only if I can stay snuggled up inside watching movies and doing my crafty-old lady hobbies.  Saturday, I made healthier chocolate chip cookies.  (Which are gone, btw.  My uncle's a bit of a sweet tooth).  They were pretty good.  It was the first time that I made them, they were pretty much oatmeal cookies with chocolate chips instead of raisins.  I'll make my own adjustments next time I make them.

I also worked on one of the knitted blankets that I started a while ago.  It's a really pretty purple color, hopefully I'll finish it at some point within the next decade. I have 2 blankets and 2 scarves in progress right now.  I'm also working on a bead necklace.

I spent the rest of the day watching some movies on demand.  Thank you Verizon Fios.  I watched "The Ugly Truth" and "The Proposal".  I don't care what you say, I still love Katherine Heigl.  It was a pretty good movie.  I always like a good romantic comedy.  I also liked "The Proposal" because 1) Ryan Reynolds.  He's pretty AND funny (as is Ms Bullock).  2)  The scene where Sandra Bullock is chanting and dancing with Betty White.  I just about peed myself when she started in on "to the windows, to the wall".  I hope everyone had a good weekend!

Jane Austen

I've started reading Pride and Prejudice again.  It's a great book but I've never actually read the entire thing.  I always start it, feel really confident, but then before I finish it I decide I want to watch the movie.  The BBC version that's like 5 hours long, not that crap that has Keira Knightly in it.  I mean, I like her and all, but I'd just much rather stare at Colin Firth.  I also like staring at him better than words on a page. 

My desire to watch this is heightened whenever I watch or read Bridget Jones' Diary.  I love that Colin Firth is in that movie as well and his name is Darcy.  Brilliant casting in my humble opinion.  I also want to read all of Jane Austen's books after I watch "The Jane Austen Book Club".  It's a fantastic movie, and it will make you want to read everything she's ever written. I've also got a copy of "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies", which I'll get to after I've finished "Pride and Prejudice.
